Windows protect our homes from wind, rain, sleet, snow, and more. Aside from protection against the elements, they also allow homeowners to enjoy a nice breeze while keeping bugs and other pests out. Unfortunately, our windows won’t last forever, which is why you need to be prepared when it’s time for new ones.
Vinyl replacement windows can make a big difference, but you may need help from the experts to get the job done right. Here, the team from ARMORVUE Home Exteriors, serving northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, will help you learn how to measure for new windows.
Vinyl windows have been around since the 1960s. While they were big in the 1960s and 1970s, they have recently made a resurgence because of new advancements. Vinyl windows feature frames made of PVC, which is a strong and reliable synthetic plastic. Unlike metal or wood frames, they don’t suffer from the rust and decay that can result from weather.
Another aspect of vinyl windows homeowners will love is their cost. Vinyl is a generally affordable material that can be found throughout our homes. Because it is so durable, it rarely requires any maintenance, which saves you more money in the long run. It doesn’t require fresh coats of paint like wood window frames do. A simple wipe from a washcloth when your windows are dirty should do the trick.
Finally, today’s vinyl windows are more energy-efficient, which is something every homeowner will appreciate. This means you’ll also be saving money when it comes to your utility bills.
Because windows need to be airtight to ensure no heat or cool air escapes, precise measurements are necessary. While professionals have the knowledge and tools to handle this process, homeowners are likely to have questions about how to measure vinyl replacement windows. When you know the correct measurements for your windows, it can provide more confidence when looking at options in a showroom or speaking with installation specialists over the phone. It will also help rule out certain frame styles that might not be feasible with your opening space. Some standard measuring steps are:
Start by measuring your windows between the jambs at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening. The smallest of these three measurements is the true window opening width. Write all three down and mark which is the true width.
Next, measure from the top of the sill to the top of the window opening. Again, you’ll want to do this three times: once on the far left, once in the middle, and once on the far right. Write down the measurements and circle the smallest.
While it may not be a measurement shown on many listings, knowing the window’s depth can still be helpful. Open the window and measure the sill space from the back of the trim to the front. This number should be at least 3-¼ inches for the replacement to fit.
Lastly, you’ll want to measure from the top corner (where the head meets the jamb) to the opposite bottom corner (where the jamb meets the sill). Then, record this measurement and do the same with the opposite corners, giving you measurements for each diagonal length. These measurements shouldn’t have a difference of more than a quarter of an inch, or you’ll need to make an adjusted width measurement and consider a different replacement option.
There are many responsibilities in maintaining a home and replacing windows may not be the highest priority. However, there are several reasons you should consider looking at replacements, including:
It’s also worth mentioning that, while windows should last between 15 and 50 years, they will need to be replaced eventually. It’s better to replace older windows now before bigger problems arise.
